Kuukai is based on the Japanese-Chinese live-action movie Kuukai: Utsukushiki Ouhi no Nazo, which in turn is based on the Yumemakura Baku's novel Shamon Kuukai Tou no Kuni nite Oni to Utagesu. The movie screened in China on December 22, 2017.
